Pilar Quesada is the owner and manager of “Mundo Enológico Q&M”, a family winery located in Bullas, Spain. Although it is the smallest one of all the “Denominación de Origen” area, these wines are being more and more famous due to its high quality. She tells us about her experience in wine cellar’s management.
• Vinest Journal: Why did you start your activity in wine making?
Pilar Quesada: I was born in Bullas, which is a land linked with wine for hundreds of years. Another fact is given by my studies: I have a degree in Biology and a I am a doctor in Oenology, especifically in wine levadures.
We started in 1997 with a little shop and a so called “wine room” with the idea making our own wines in the next future. In fact, we produced our first one in 1998.
• VJ: What kind of wine do you produce?
PQ: We make two kinds of wines, always red wines. One is the young one from the vintage of the current year and the other one is the last year selection. The first one is 100 % monastrell, the main grape variety of the Bullas “Denominación de Origen” area. All our wines have the trade mark “Mercader Quesada”, which are the surnames of my husband and me.
• VJ: Is your production big or small?
PQ: We are the smallest winery in Bullas and we produce under 20.000 bottles per year.
• VJ: Do you organize any sort of activities in your winery?
PQ: Yes, we have guided tours to our vineyards and wine cellar and wine tastings there, too.
• VJ: What do you consider as the most exciting or interesting thing in your work?
PQ: I think it is managing my own winery and following the development of my wines.
• VJ: What about the future in wine production?
PQ: Sometimes I think it is not the best moment
at global level. When we hear about economic crisis, I think it
will have bad consequences for wine sector.
But thinking about local level I consider that wine can get
important achievements. Now, Bullas is equal to wine. Some people
called me “crazy” in 1997 and after all these years we
see that wine production is one of the most important things in our
town. I am happy with being an “agent” of wine culture,
the main sign of identity of Bullas.
