Begastri is the name of an antique city which flourished between the 1st and 6th centuries (Roman and Visigothic times) near the modern town of Cehegin, in the Northwestern part of the Region of Murcia, Spain. Today, Cehegin has this part of its history and heritage as something unique and special, and the name "Begastri" is beared with proud by many public and private entities.
The most recent winery created in the area is also called Begastri, projecting this old name to a brilliant future and joined to the production of high quality wines. The winery is located in the village of Cañada de Canara, near Cehegin. Its vineyards are situated in a hillside on calcareous soil, just behind the estete, which is also accessible for limited mobility people.
The main grape variety is mainly Monastrell, the typical one in the area, but also Syrah, Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot and Grenache. The harvest takes place in plastic boxes holding a maximum of 8-10 kg and grapes are inmediately taken into the winery. They are normally selected to determinate those which go to the tanks for the wine making.
Organic production is one of the most important features of Bodegas Begastri, from the vine growing to the wine making, seeking both quality and environment preservation. The result is Sinedie, which is the trade mark of an organic wine produced using technologically advanced methods. It is a dry, rich and aromatic wine, ideal to be matched with red meat and all kinds of stews. Its aging is made in 60 barrels of French and American oak.
